What does it take to become a licensed home inspector?

It takes more than you might imagine.
First of all you need experience in the construction industry or a college
education in the engineering. Not just any handy person can be a home
inspector.
Step number two is to attend school to learn the specifics of home inspection
and the rules that need to be followed as dictated by the State of New Jersey.
So far so good, but wait there is more. There is a National Home Inspector
Exam that must be passed. It can be tricky!
After all that the prospective inspector must either work for an inspector and
perform 350 inspections or do an unpaid internship with a licensed home
inspector to gain experience prior to applying to the State Board for a license.
The State Of New Jersey takes applications very seriously. An applicant must
be of good moral character, purchase very expensive insurance and of course
satisfy all the other requirements with full documentation.
So the license is granted and you are now an inspector. In order to retain the
license there is a continuing education requirement to keep that license.
Any good inspector will use a computerized reporting program and take
pictures of the defects or items in need of general maintenance. Since the
inspector is not allowed to perform as a contractor on any home they inspect
for a period of one year he/she will recommend a course of action that should
be taken to remedy and defects.
